The use of the near-infrared spectral imager (NIR) up to a wavelength of 2.5 μm is of immense economic importance. For example, NIR technology in recycling plants ensures sorted material separation, resulting in considerable energy savings.

In food production, it enabled real-time inspection with subsequent sorting according to reproducible criteria(s). Automotive electronics use NIR to improve night and fog visibility for the preventive collision avoidance by modern driver assistance systems.
